How Do E-Bikes Work?
Trek Electric bikes amplify the rider's own pedal power. Trek’s e-bikes are pedal assist which means the motor helps the pedals turn when you are pedaling. There is no throttle like a motorcycle or a dirt bike. Instead, the motor gives the rider a boost when they pedal. When the pedaling stops, so does the boost.
Here’s what you need to know about how Trek e-bikes work and the parts that make them unique.
High-Performance Motor
The e-bike motor is located around the pedals in the bottom bracket area. Depending on the model, the motor has a power output between 250 and 350 watts and provides assist up to 20 or 28mph. Trek partners exclusively with Bosch electronics.
Long-Life Battery
Trek e-bikes run off lithium-ion batteries (li-ion), the most popular type of battery for e-bikes. They’re waterproof, durable, and can be recharged on or off the bike at any household electrical outlet. Lithium-ion batteries provide some of the best longevity and range in the industry. How far it will take you depends on the level of assist, the type of terrain you’re riding, and your weight.
Easy-To-Control Assist
A handlebar-mounted controller lets you choose the perfect level of assist. In additon, the controller indicates speed and battery life. The rider is in control of the whole experience without ever having to take their hands off the handlebar.
Integrated, User-Friendly Tech
Trek’s e-bikes have downtube mounted batteries. Some are visible on the downtube and others are integrated. Trek’s Removable Integrated Battery (RIB) is available on select models. The one-piece battery and cover takes the hassle out of removing your battery for transport, charging, and storage. No tools are needed.
Bosch Dependability and Support
Trek and Surly electric bikes use Bosch e-bike systems. Bosch motors, batteries, and controllers are high-quality, well-designed, dependable, and provide excellent performance. Bosch motors are lightweight and compact, powerful and quiet. They are barely noticeable while providing just the right amount of oomph to your ride.
